Joe Reich and Carol Reich are the co-founders of the Beginning with Children Foundation, which opened the first charter-like school in New York City in 1992.
Since the Reiches began their work, the charter movement has spread across the country, offering children a way out of failing schools through privately managed public schools accessible to all through a simple lottery. But when they first conceived of their school, Beginning With Children, no one had ever started an independent public school anywhere in the country. Getting to Bartlett Street is a tale that will inspire supporters of education reform everywhere.
Joe Reich co-founded Reich & Tang, a leading investment firm, in 1970. Carol Reich is the former president of the Lexington Center (formerly the Lexington School for the Deaf). They live in New York City.
